Tsurumi Island in Genshin Impact—if you’ve ever set foot there, you know it’s one of the creepiest, foggiest places in the whole game. But aside from its eerie vibe, the island holds a pretty tragic story that will tug at your heartstrings if you dig into it. What’s the deal with the fog, the ghosts, and that poor boy Ruu? Let’s break it down.
Ruu, the Traveler, and the Never-Ending Ritual
So, the whole Tsurumi Island adventure starts when Sumida (who’s writing a book, by the way) sends you there to find a mystical thing called the Maushiro. Simple enough, right? Well, not quite. When you get there, you meet Ruu, a mysterious boy who’s clearly up to something big. He’s trying to complete some important ritual that’s supposed to honor a massive bird deity called Kanna Kapatcir (we’ll get to her in a bit).
At first glance, it seems simple: assist Ruu, do the ceremony, and then return for a snack. However, you quickly realize that Tsurumi Island is, well, strange. It’s kind of strange. You soon discover that the island is trapped in a strange time loop and that its residents are essentially ghosts who are repeatedly reliving the day they were destroyed. Yes, that is one of those circumstances.
And poor Ruu? He’s trapped in this loop too, trying to finish this ritual and, in his mind, save his people. Spoiler: it doesn’t go as planned.
The Thunderbird and Tsurumi Island’s Dark History
Let’s talk about Kanna Kapatcir, the Great Thunderbird. Legends on the island state that the residents of Tsurumi revered this enormous bird as a protective deity. They believed that by enveloping the island in that thick fog, she was safeguarding it from intruders. Quite awesome, isn’t it? The worst part is that Kapatcir wasn’t really aware that others were worshiping her. She wasn’t really interested in the blood sacrifices they began to give in an attempt to please her. She was actually more like, “Humans? What people?
And Ruu comes next. In one of these rites, this poor child was selected to be slaughtered. The islanders felt that by offering Ruu as a sacrifice, they were appeasing Kapatcir and ensuring their safety. In a terrible turn of events, however, Kapatcir had a totally different perspective. When she learned what had happened to Ruu, she became enraged and believed that she had been deceived by the people. And it typically doesn’t end well when a gigantic, enraged bird deity believes you have betrayed her.
Kapatcir, in her rage, wiped out the entire island. And just like that, Tsurumi Island was no more.
The Never-Ending Curse
The devastation was only the beginning of Kapatcir’s fury. Her grief at Ruu’s passing imprisoned the island in a curse, making its inhabitants repeatedly relive that last, horrible day. Now trapped in this never-ending cycle, the islanders are only shadows, or “occurrences,” as the game refers to them. They are unaware that they have passed away.
Ruu finally breaks the curse with the Traveler’s assistance, but it’s a bittersweet experience. You see, Ruu participated in the ceremony that ultimately brought the island to ruin, therefore he was never going to rescue it. He ultimately succeeds in keeping his word to Kapatcir by performing her a song and restoring harmony between them.
Kapatcir’s Legacy: A Thunder God’s Rage
Despite all, Kapatcir’s journey is far from over. Her anger persisted even after she was murdered by the Raiden Shogun during the Archon War. On Seirai Island, another stormy, chaotic area of Inazuma, it took the form of the Thunder Manifestation. Ruu’s journey comes to a close when the Traveler assists her in laying Kapatcir’s feather to rest in the latter minutes of the Tsurumi Island questline, providing some closure to this tragic tale.
The tale of Tsurumi Island is ultimately more than simply a side mission; it serves as a chilling warning of how quickly things can get out of hand when gods and humans misinterpret one another. The island, with its dense fog and eerie quiet, continues to remind people of unmet promises and the terrible results that followed.
